Have you arrived here by following one of Lúa’s stories? This time, our stop is La Virgen del Camino, near León. You do not need to travel into the past to visit: you can add it to the places you would like to see on your French Way.
The story we tell belongs to a religious tradition. It helps to distinguish the traditional account, the documented history of the buildings and the scenes we recreate to tell the story.
The legend of the shepherd and the stone
The history published by the sanctuary’s Dominican community dates the encounter to 2 July 1505. Its central figure is Alvar Simón Fernández, a shepherd from Velilla de la Reina who, according to tradition, saw the Virgin Mary while tending his livestock.
The account says that he was asked to notify the Bishop of León. When he feared that he would not be believed, the Virgin used the shepherd’s sling to throw a small stone. The promised sign was that they would find it transformed into a much larger stone. Tradition connects this episode with the origins of the hermitage and the sanctuary.
We do not present the apparition or the stone’s transformation as proven historical facts. They are part of the devotional tradition recorded by the sanctuary itself.
